Dr. J.B.D. Castro’s sudden demise on 26th May was a very sad news for the entire homeopathic world especially in India.
Besides being an ardent follower of Hahnemann, always propagating a classical approach, he was known as a teacher par excellence, a teacher of teachers, a master prescriber, an author of homeopathic books, founder of homeo institutes and above all a guiding spirit for all those came into his contact.
Dr. J B D’ Castro was a renowned and dedicated homoeopath who has been practicing at Chandigarh in India since 1960. He is an ardent follower of ‘Dr. Hahnemann’ (father of homoeopathy). Dr. Castro’s books and thoughts have gone a long way to promote homoeopathy in India and abroad, in right direction. In recognition of the services rendered and the efforts made, he has been awarded with ‘Dr. Madhu Rastogi National Award’ in 1999 for promoting education in homoeopathy, throughout the country.
In 2003 he was given the ‘State Award’ by the Punjab Government for bringing homoeopathy and social welfare together, by fighting against social evils like drug addiction, quarrels, dowry harassment, alcoholism etc. with homoeopathic medicines. It is because of his knowledge and the power to heal that he was appointed as the Honorary Physician to the Governor of Punjab (1974) and to the President of India (1985).
He has been the member of the Central Council of Homoeopathic System of Medicine, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, New Delhi (for five years) and the Chairman of the Regulation Committee of Central Council of Homoeopathy for one year. He was also chosen as one of the members of the adhoc Advisory Committee of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Punjab.
It was due to his efforts that the Homoeopathic Councils in Chandigarh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Haryana were established
His wife Dr. Meera is also a dedicated homoeopath with more than 30 years of clinical experience. She is equally devoted to the cause of homoeopathy and strives to do everything within her power to bring glory to the system. Going by the adage “Behind every successful man, there is a woman” Dr. Meera Castro has also been instrumental in the success of Dr. J.B.D’ Castro in many ways.
Dr. Castro together with Dr Meera formed a highly professional couple. Dr Castro’s indomitable faith in homeopathy can be gauged from the last happening. His close associates have often been telling about him that he always used to say, “I want to die at my Home or in my Clinic not in any Allopathic Hospital only with homeopathic medicines in my mouth” That is exactly how his end came, on 26th May at his home past midnight. May his soul rest in peace.

Yes Dr Castro was a true Hahnemannian homoeopath- the founder of our Hom Med College Chandigarh (the premier homoeopathic institute of northern India. I am one of the lucky student of this college to whom he taught Organon & MM in 1975-1979.
On 26th May I was one the lucky few who lifted his coffin till his last journey. Really he was an ardent homoeopath to the core.
