Understanding autism spectrum disorders :
Autism is not a single disease, but rather a group of closely linked disorders with overlapping characteristics. Every autistic person struggles with social contact, empathy, communication, and flexibility to some extent. However, the degree of disability and the combination of symptoms varies greatly between individuals. In fact, two children with the same diagnoses may exhibit completely diverse behaviors and abilities.
As a parent of a child on the autism spectrum, you may come across several terms such as high-functioning autism, atypical autism, autism spectrum disorder, and pervasive developmental disorder. These terms can be perplexing, not just because there are numerous of them, but also because doctors, therapists, and other parents may use them differently.
Abstract
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a type of neurodevelopmental disorder that is characterized by difficulties in social communication and the presence of repetitive behaviors and restricted interests. The prevalence of ASD has been a cause for concern lately, and this article aims to explain the factors that may impact prevalence rates, including changes to diagnostic criteria. The article also reviews the evidence that ASD is a neurobiological disorder influenced by both genetic and environmental factors that affect the developing brain. Additionally, the article lists factors that may increase the risk of ASD. Lastly, the article provides guidance on screening for comorbid conditions and describes how clinical evaluation starts with developmental screening, followed by referral for a definitive diagnosis.
