Lilium Tigrinum: A war between sacred devotion and forbidden desire

Dr Jessie Jeba Geetha S

ABSTRACT
The personality of Lilium tigrinum (Tiger Lily) in homoeopathy is often associated with intense emotional turbulence, strong passions and inner restlessness. Individuals who match this remedy may exhibit mood swings, irritability and a tendency to suppress their emotions, leading to frustration and nervous tension. They often feel hurried, as if driven by an inner force, yet struggle with indecisiveness and feelings of guilt.

A key trait is a duality between deep sensitivity and outward irritability, often manifesting as a conflict between personal desires and moral responsibilities.

Physically, they may experience sensations of pressure or fullness, particularly in the pelvic region, aligning with the remedy’s use for menstrual and uterine issues.

The Lilium tigrinum personality embodies a mix of fiery energy and emotional vulnerability, making it a fascinating remedy in homoeopathic psychology.

KEYWORDS– Lilium tigrinum, Homoeopathy, constitutional remedy, conflict, duality, suppressed emotions.

INTRODUCTION
TIGER LILY is a powerful poison, therefore, a good medicine, says Dr.Tyler

It is a well proved and very definite and distinguishing symptoms and an important female remedy. This plant is a native of China and Japan, but it is cultivated widely in other countries. This important female remedy is unknown to old school practitioners. Tiger lily is cultivated in gardens, these flowers look like the skin of tiger and for this reason the name “ tiger lily”. The Tiger Lily, was introduced into the West from China and Japan, was first suggested as a remedy by W.E. Payne in 1867. Carrol Dunham urged Payne to have it well proved. So Payne did and Dunham himself assisted, proving was done in a woman.

DOCTRINE SIGNATURE
BULBS, CORMS AND RHIZOMES- They can do underground stem modifications. Eventhough the plant above the ground dries up during unfavourable condition. It can always reproduce the plant when favourable situation comes.

LEAVES ALTERNATE- Alternating thoughts about being religious and lascivious.

SOLITARY/CYMOSE INFLORESCENCE- Solitary represents forsaken feeling. Cymose represents fear of being alone.

BISEXUAL FLOWERS- This denotes their sexual excess.

DUALITY
The remedy comes from a plant kingdom. Its name goes by LILIUM(lilly) and TIGRINUM(tiger). In the name only it has both plant and animal. So the personality also has 2 parts.

Plant part- chasity, purity, religiousness

Animal part- sexuality, passion

CONFLICT
These 2 parts can also be explained like 2 sides of a coin. Where one side is religious, has great anxiety about salvation whereas the other side has increased sexual desire and constantly develops on sexual thoughts. So there is always a war with one another. Basically a conflict between moral and animal behaviour.

SUPPRESSION OF EMOTIONS
They constantly get sexual thoughts. Since they are religious and think more about salvation. They consider this as a SIN.

“TREMENDOUS RELIGIOUS ORTHODOXY”

So they keep on suppressing those sexual thoughts. Here religious can also be interpreted as a activity that should be done on daily routine, more as a duty.

“THEY CAN ALMOST PROPHESY THAT THEY WILL BE AFFLICTED BY SOME TERRIBLE DISEASE OR MISHAP WILL OCCUR”

During this conflict phase, if the person cant do the work properly then, that can lead to sexual excitement.

BROODING
Because of this sexual excitement, they start to brood on it. Here, a negative mindset is perceived. There is no such negativity in their life, but they constantly think about that. The reaction here is to torment themselves or punishing, inorder to suppress the thoughts.

“THEY ARE UNABLE TO INTEGRATE THESE TWO SIDES OF THEIR PERSONALITY”

OCCUPIED
They keep themselves busy and occupied. They takeup many works and they think everything is depending on them and the sense of responsibility is high. So they think they can do even the impossible things.

“LISTLESS, INERT, YET DOES NOT WANT TO SIT STILL” They work at a very rapid pace, in a hurried manner. This hurriedness leads to restlessness.

“RESTLESS: MUST KEEP THEM BUSY INORDER TO REPRESS SEXUAL DESIRE”

CONFUSION
Because of restlessness, sometimes their actions occur before they even think of doing them. This leads to confusion of mind. Most of the time lilium persons successfully supress their thoughts but sometimes their sexual thoughts overpower their religious side. Then the person gets engorsed in sexual thoughts.

ANXIETY AND FEAR
Because of those sexual thoughts, they tend to develop fear and anxiety. Thinking they wont get salvation because of committing this sin. Anything going out of track makes them anxious and that leads to guilt. The person tries to hold back themselves, so that they don’t go off track.

DEVIATION
So the deviation from morals in mind and in physical body is reflected in prolapse.

LILIUM TIGRINUM HAS CURED THE MOST INVETERATE PROTRUDING PILES WITH BURNING-says Dr.Kent

This creates fear and guilt. Uterus represents the ability to procreate, if the ability is lost, that can lead to anxiety. Fear of heart disease, they feel that they would definitely die one day due to heart disease. Pain is dull and pressive in region of heart, sometimes it is imaginary.

SELF-ACCUSATION
Same as cal.c, Lilium tig also has fear that something bad might happen. This feeling is because of thinking that having sexual thoughts is a sin. So whatever bad happened, the person blames himself and she believes that people wont like them. The person has this forsaken feeling that nobody will talk to them.

Their(POV): “ I AM A BAD PERSON, I HAVE DONE A GREAT SIN, MY FAMILY WONT ACCEPT ME”

INNER STRUGGLE
They have a question in mind like “who am I to them?”. End up in identity crisis. Thinks that whatever love and support family has shown till now is fake and not real. This is all because that, “I have done mistakes before and that has destroyed me and my family”.

DESTRUCTION MODE
So they think that, if they get out of this body this problem will be solved. “I have to change my personality”. “I have to repair myself”. It is an unending conflict. Atlast they go into self destructing mode and desires to die. And so they have this suicidal disposition.

OTHER ASPECTS
HAUGHTY & FAULT FINDING- they keep on exaggerating their own importance and always boast about their achievements.

CONSTANT SWEARING & CURSING- keep on swearing and cursing other people who contraindicates them.

CONCLUSION
The Lilium Tigrinum personality is a fascinating study in contrasts torn between deep religious devotion and overpowering sensual desires. This internal struggle creates a sense of restlessness, guilt and emotional turbulence, making them prone to mood swings and inner conflict. They often feel pressured by time and responsibility, yet simultaneously battle intrusive thoughts and suppressed emotions. Physically, this tension manifests in symptoms related to the reproductive system and nervous energy. Understanding Lilium Tigrinum offers insight into the delicate balance between moral ideals and human impulses, making it a compelling remedy for those navigating the push and pull of their own dual nature.
