Medicinal properties of Aegle folia: a natural homoeopathic remedy for health

Abstract
Aegle Folia, commonly known as the bael leaf, has been widely recognized in traditional medicine system such as Ayurveda for its therapeutic properties. this review aims to explore the phytochemical composition, pharmacological activities, and medicinal application of aegle folia. Studies have highlighted the presence of bioactive compounds like alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, and coumarins, which contribute to its anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and hypoglycemic effect. Furthermore, aegle folia has shown potential in managing conditions like diabetes, gastro-intestinal disorders and inflammatory disease. This paper provides an overview of the traditional uses and modern scientific validation of aegle folia, emphasizing its role as natural remedies of health. Further research is needed to standardize its use and evaluate its efficacy through clinical trials.

Introduction
This Indian medicinal plant is considered a vast source of several pharmacologically active principle and compounds, which are commonly used in home remedies against multiple ailments. This is generally considered as sacred tree by the Hindus as its leaves are offered to lord Shiva during worship. According to Hindu mythology, the tree is another form of lord Kailashnath. Leaves, fruit, stem and roots of this tree at all stages are used as a ethno-medicine against various human ailments(1).

Pathophysiological Action on Various Systems

  • Antioxidant Activity:
  • Mechanism: Aegle marmelos contains various antioxidants, including flavonoids and phenolic compounds. These compounds scavenge free radicals, reducing oxidative stress(2).
  • Anti-inflammatory Activity:
  • Mechanism: The plant’s compounds inhibit the production of inflammatory mediators like cytokines and prostaglandins(3).
  • Antimicrobial Activity:
  • Mechanism: Extracts from Aegle marmelos exhibit antimicrobial activity against a wide range of bacteria and fungi. The mode of action involves disruption of cell wall synthesis and membrane permeability(4).
  • Hypoglycemic Activity:
  • Mechanism: Aegle marmelos can help regulate blood glucose levels by stimulating insulin secretion and improving insulin sensitivity(5).
  • Gastroprotective Activity:
  • Mechanism: The plant’s compounds protect the gastric mucosa by reducing acid secretion and enhancing mucus production(6).
  • Hepatoprotective Activity:
  • Mechanism: Aegle marmelos protects the liver by reducing oxidative stress, inflammation, and lipid peroxidation(7).

However the pathophysiological action of Aegle Folia is explained and its role in various systems as an anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory etc. are considered shortly. As Homoeopathy system of medicine works on its principle “Similia Similibus Curenture”  means “Like cures Like” and the proving of the medicines are done on healthy human beings. These symptoms which are produced by this remedy can be cured by this remedy in diseased person. There are following symptoms which are cured by this remedy:-

GI Symptoms:- dyspepsia, pain in abdomen, constipation with hemorrhoids, anorexia, sour eructation, amoebic and bacillary dysentery, increased flatulence and diarrhea are symptoms of gastric complaints which are treated with aegle folia. As aegle folia is an Indian drug and having specific action to treat IBS.

Respiratory Symptoms:- aegle folia is having anti-inflammatory action so the respiratory diseases like, COPD, asthma and pneumonia are treated with this remedy.

Cardiac Symptoms:- dropsy of any part of body due to heart diseases and beri -beri i.e. caused by Vit. B1 deficiency are treated with aegle folia. The pulse is being full, strong and irregular due to cardiac complaints are corrected with this remedy.

Reproductive Symptoms:- it is used as an anti-infertility, uterine tonic, menstrual irregularities(8).

Weather, aegle folia is having holistic action on every system of our body, but the main action of this remedy is on GIT System.
