RESEARCH LABORATORIES:
Research Facilitation Centre consists of six laboratories viz., Microbiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacognosy, Nanotechnology, Pathology and Biotechnology. Out of this six laboratories Biotechnology Lab is under construction. Apart from that all other laboratories are functioning well for the betterment of students and faculties research.
Microbiology Lab
Microbiology laboratory has facilities for culturing, examination, and identification of microorganisms including bacteria, fungi, yeasts, etc. The microbiology laboratory has a crucial role in effective infection prevention and control. The laboratory is supervised by Dr. C.V. Chandraja, Research Officer, RFC, SKHMC. This lab consists of portable and non-portable Autoclave, Laminar Air flow Chamber, Hot Air Oven and other microbiological instruments. Microbiological works such as pure culture of bacterial and fungal pathogens of plant and animal origin. Isolation and enumeration of pathogens from source, which can be plant or Clinical samples. Antimicrobial and Antifungal activity of medicines and their potency, MIC and MBC of medicines. Pre and post evaluation of infections before and after treatment including Urine culture, Blood culture, Oral swabs, Throat swabs and vaginal culture.
Biochemistry Lab
A biochemistry laboratory deals with studies involving chemical processes within living organisms. Such as enzymatic quantification, substrate and product quantification, chemical kinetics, Inhibition assays etc. Biochemistry laboratory is also supervised by Dr. C.V. Chandraja, Research Officer, RFC, SKHMC. The main works going on there in the laboratory are Carbohydrate estimation, Blood glucose estimation, Protein estimation from Clinical samples and Plant samples, Vitamin C estimation, Phytochemical studies, Chlorophyll estimation etc. Along with these studies ELISA techniques were used for Hormone assay and Antibody assay.
Pharmacognosy LabPharmacognosy is a specific discipline that deals with the rapid developments in the knowledge and utilization of medicinal substances of biological origin used for human and veterinary purposes. The laboratory has various instruments like Large and Small Soxhlet apparatus, Vacuum Desiccator, Rotary Vacuum Evaporator, TLC Unit and distillation unit. The microbiology laboratory is supervised by Dr. S.T. Gopukumar, Research Associate, RFC, SKHMC. The main works going on there in the laboratory are hot solvent soxhlet extraction for both plant and animal samples. Apart from that phytochemical analysis of both crude and homoeopathic samples were performed in qualitative level. Quantification of compounds were sent for outside MoU institutes and laboratories.
Nanotechnology Lab
The Nanotechnology Laboratory at the RFC, SKHMC acts as a resource centre to address the scientific problems related to medical nanotechnology. The objectives of the laboratory include synthesis, characterization and production of nanoparticles and various other areas of nanotechnology relevant to future medical sciences. The Nanotechnology Research Laboratory aims at initiating and pursuing research activities in areas related to nanotechnology and nanoscale phenomena through funded research projects, doctoral and masters level projects, bachelor degree projects, short term programs and collaborative research. Dr. S.T. Gopukumar, Research Associate, RFC, SKHMC is the in-charge of this laboratory. The main works going on there in the laboratory are nano synthesis and nano characterization. Apart from basic characterization the higher characterization studies were sent to Noorul Islam Centre for Higher Education (Noorul Islam University), Kumarcoil, our MoU institute.
Pathology Lab
Health care providers may be unfamiliar with the workings of the pathology laboratory. The delivery of a specimen to the pathology laboratory initiates a complex series of events resulting in a pathologic diagnosis/interpretation. Dr. Manoj Radhakrishnan, Addl. Professor, Dept of Pathology and Microbiology, SKHMC is the in-charge of this laboratory. Moreover, he is a certified pathologist. He holds special training in the diagnosis and detection of disease. Practicing pathologists may be subspecialty or general pathologists, depending on the types of cases they review on a daily basis. Some pathologists may perform a subspecialty fellowship in a specific area of pathology such as cytopathology, hematopathology, dermatopathology, nephropathology, neuropathology, etc. But he often works in the lab with FNAC, Biopsy samples. This pathology lab consists of advanced photo and video capturing trinocular microscope. So far, plant cross sectional studies were carried out and documented.
