Preface
There are small & large works of Materia Medica. Larger works contain every reliable, unreliable, doubtful, visionary, & worthless symptoms mixed together. Smaller work contains more prominent & reliable symptoms compiled mostly from larger works & rearranged without reference to critical study of drug characteristics or original source of symptoms being the abridgement of the older & larger works.

For a reliable work a revision based on critical study of original sources & drug characteristics & pathogency of every symptom found in all Materia medica,  society reports & periodicals published during past twenty five years is required.

William D Gentry for fifteen years devoted his entire time to the study of  Materia Medica for the above mentioned symptoms for concordance repertory. Every drug has the natural power of producing some symptoms or class of symptoms peculiar to itself. Such characteristic symptoms if given in few words possible then our Materia medica will be well settled as Bible.

Two steps are take to make this book as settled as bible

  • Selection of reliable & Characteristic symptoms
  • Whenever the phraseology of a symptom was faulty, or could be expressed in fewer words without changing the sense or object of the sentence, it has been done.

This book can be said to be rubrical, regional & a true textbook.

It is rubrical, because it gives only symptoms which may be underlined with red ink as perfectly reliable.

It is regional, because it is in sections, and each section is devoted to a region or organ.

It is truly a text-book, because it has wide spaces between the symptoms to provide a receptacle for future provings, clinical symptoms, notes or observations, and for gleanings from other works and periodicals. Therefore it is called the Rubrical and Regional Text-book of the Homoeopathic Materia Medica.

The preface have been written on August 1890 from Chicago.
