Abstract
\n<\/strong>Homeopathy is based on principles and a system of knowledge different from the ones supporting\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 conventional\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 biomedical\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 model:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 this\u00a0 epistemological\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 conflict\u00a0\u00a0 is\u00a0 the\u00a0 underlying reason\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 explaining why homeopathy is so difficult to accept by present-day scientific reason. To legitimize \u00a0homeopathy\u00a0\u00a0 according\u00a0\u00a0 to\u00a0\u00a0 the\u00a0\u00a0 standards\u00a0\u00a0 of\u00a0\u00a0 the\u00a0\u00a0 latter,\u00a0\u00a0 research\u00a0\u00a0 must\u00a0\u00a0 confirm\u00a0\u00a0 the\u00a0\u00a0 validity\u00a0\u00a0 of\u00a0\u00a0 its\u00a0 basic assumptions: principle of therapeutic similitude, trials of medicines on healthy individuals,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 individualized\u00a0\u00a0 prescriptions\u00a0\u00a0 and\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 use\u00a0 of\u00a0\u00a0 high\u00a0\u00a0 dilutions.\u00a0\u00a0 Correspondingly,\u00a0\u00a0 basic\u00a0\u00a0 research\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 must supply experimental data and models to substantiate the basic assumptions, whilst clinical trials\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 aim at confirming the efficacy and effectiveness of homeopathy in the treatment of disease.<\/p>\n

Introduction
\n<\/strong>Founded\u00a0\u00a0 in\u00a0\u00a0 1796\u00a0\u00a0 by\u00a0\u00a0 German\u00a0\u00a0 physician\u00a0\u00a0 Samuel\u00a0\u00a0 Hahnemann,\u00a0\u00a0 homeopathy\u00a0\u00a0 is\u00a0\u00a0 a\u00a0\u00a0 medical\u00a0\u00a0 approach\u00a0\u00a0 employed worldwide and that continually awakens the interest of users, medical students and doctors ever since [1].<\/p>\n

The reason is\u00a0 that\u00a0 it allows for a safe and efficient therapeutic practice, while it seeks to comprehend and treat patients and their diseases within a globalizing and humanistic framework [2,3], which gives especial value to different facets of ill individuals in their uniqueness.<\/p>\n

Regarding\u00a0\u00a0 its\u00a0\u00a0 institutionalization,\u00a0\u00a0 the\u00a0\u00a0 case\u00a0\u00a0 of\u00a0\u00a0 Brazil\u00a0\u00a0 is\u00a0\u00a0 one\u00a0\u00a0 among\u00a0\u00a0 the\u00a0\u00a0 ones\u00a0\u00a0 illustrating\u00a0\u00a0 a\u00a0 high\u00a0\u00a0 degree\u00a0\u00a0 of development.\u00a0\u00a0 Homeopathy\u00a0\u00a0 was\u00a0\u00a0 acknowledged\u00a0\u00a0 as\u00a0\u00a0 a\u00a0\u00a0 medical\u00a0\u00a0 specialty\u00a0\u00a0 by\u00a0\u00a0 the\u00a0\u00a0 Federal\u00a0\u00a0 Council\u00a0\u00a0 of\u00a0\u00a0 Medicine (CFM) in 1980 (Resolution CFM 1000\/80) and the Brazilian Medical Association (AMB) confers the degree of specialist\u00a0\u00a0 since\u00a0\u00a0 1990.\u00a0\u00a0 Homeopathic\u00a0\u00a0 physicians,\u00a0\u00a0 thus,\u00a0\u00a0 are\u00a0\u00a0 a\u00a0\u00a0 part\u00a0\u00a0 of\u00a0\u00a0 the\u00a0\u00a0 medical\u00a0\u00a0 community.\u00a0\u00a0 Homeopathy\u00a0\u00a0 is taught\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 in lato\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 sensu\u00a0 post-graduation\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 programs\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 (1,200-hours)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 hosted\u00a0\u00a0 by\u00a0\u00a0 institutions\u00a0\u00a0 associated\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 with\u00a0\u00a0 the Brazilian\u00a0\u00a0 Homeopathic\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Medical\u00a0\u00a0 Association\u00a0\u00a0 (AMHB).\u00a0\u00a0 Homeopathic\u00a0\u00a0 consultations\u00a0\u00a0 are\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 covered\u00a0\u00a0 by \u00a0\u00a0medical insurance companies and since 1985 were also made available at the National Health System.<\/p>\n

It\u00a0\u00a0 is\u00a0\u00a0 estimated\u00a0\u00a0 that\u00a0\u00a0 there\u00a0\u00a0 are\u00a0\u00a0 about\u00a0\u00a0 15,000\u00a0\u00a0 homeopathic\u00a0\u00a0 medical\u00a0\u00a0 practitioners\u00a0\u00a0 in\u00a0\u00a0 the\u00a0\u00a0 country.\u00a0\u00a0 In\u00a0\u00a0 a\u00a0\u00a0 survey carried out the last decade among Brazilian doctors by Fiocruz Foundation and CFM [4], homeopathy ranked\u00a0 th 17\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 among 61 medical specialties regarding the number of doctors who defined it as their primary area of activity.\u00a0\u00a0 After\u00a0\u00a0 approval\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 by\u00a0 the\u00a0\u00a0 National\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Commission\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 of\u00a0 Medical\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Residency\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 in\u00a0 2002\u00a0\u00a0 (Resolution\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 CFM 1634\/2002), homeopathy was included in the medical residency program of Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO, University Hospital Gaffr\u00e9 e Guinle) as an option for on-the-job-training [5] being an adjuvant\u00a0 to\u00a0 conventional\u00a0 treatment\u00a0 of\u00a0 disease\u00a0 in\u00a0 both\u00a0 outpatient\u00a0 clinic\u00a0 and\u00a0 wards.\u00a0 This\u00a0 unique\u00a0 example\u00a0 ofintegrated medicine allows for an ongoing dialog between distinct medical systems to the benefit of patients,since it offers them the best available means of diagnosis, treatment and prophylaxis of disease.<\/p>\n
