In \ufb01rst instance, we discuss criteria for\u00a0 research\u00a0 on\u00a0\u00a0 the\u00a0\u00a0 similia\u00a0\u00a0 principle\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 at\u00a0 the\u00a0\u00a0 cellular\u00a0\u00a0 level.\u00a0\u00a0 Then,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the\u00a0\u00a0 homologous\u00a0 (\u2018isopathic\u2019) approach is reviewed, in which the initial (high dose) stress used to disturb\u00a0\u00a0 cellular physiology and the subsequent (low dose) stress are identical.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Bene\ufb01cial effects of low dose stress are described in terms of increased cellular survival capacity and at the molecular level as an increase in the synthesis of heat shock proteins\u00a0 (hsps). Both phenomena re\ufb02ect a stimulation of the endogenous cellular self-recovery capacity. Low dose stress conditions applied in a homologous approach stimulate the synthesis\u00a0 of\u00a0 hsps\u00a0 and\u00a0 enhance\u00a0 survival\u00a0 in\u00a0 comparison\u00a0 with\u00a0 stressed\u00a0 cells\u00a0 that\u00a0 were incubated\u00a0 in\u00a0 the\u00a0 absence\u00a0 of\u00a0 low\u00a0 dose\u00a0 stress\u00a0 conditions.\u00a0 Thirdly,\u00a0 the\u00a0 speci\ufb01city\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0\u00a0 low dose stress condition is described where the initial (high dose) stress is different in \u00a0nature\u00a0 from\u00a0 the\u00a0 subsequently\u00a0 applied\u00a0 (low\u00a0 dose)\u00a0 stress;\u00a0 the\u00a0 heterologous\u00a0 or\u00a0 \u2018heteropathic\u2019 approach.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The results support the similia principle at the cellular level and add to understanding\u00a0 of how low dose\u00a0 stress\u00a0 conditions in\ufb02uence\u00a0 the regulatory processes underlying\u00a0 self recovery. In addition, the phenomenon of \u2018symptom aggravation\u2019 which is also observed at the cellular level, is discussed in the context of self-recovery. Finally, the difference in\u00a0\u00a0 ef\ufb01ciency\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 between\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the\u00a0\u00a0 homologous\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 and\u00a0\u00a0 the\u00a0\u00a0 heterologous\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 approach\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 is\u00a0 discussed;\u00a0 a perspective is indicated for further research; and the relationship between studies on\u00a0 the similia principle and the recently introduced concept of \u2018postconditioning hormesis\u2019\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 is emphasized.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:
